Commodores Comments Winter Message January 2008 A hopelessly belated Happy New Sailing Year to you all !!!!! With the sailing finished at the end of November last year and not due to start back until the first weekend in March, you could have been forgiven for thinking that the Sailing Club goes into hibernation during this period. Not a chance. Once sailing had officially finished, two weekends of working parties saw everything put away - or thrown away (especially some dodgy garments from the mens changing rooms) followed by the AGM, which went smoothly due to lubrication from Judy's mulled wine!. (For the minutes of the AGM see elsewhere on the website). An impromptu start to the year happened on January 1st, when weather and wind held back and a few members met up the club for a chat and walk and..... Although it was close season, three boats and crew were coaxed onto the water for a truly memorable 45 minutes. With no buoys and no guns, we beat up to the bridge up the south arm, then to the slipway post buoy and then the bank. So the first race winners this year were Pat Bird and Tony Hetherington (Enterprise), followed in joint 2nd (and last) by Dean Fountaine (Lark) and myself and Jessica (Lark). This may happen next year, but this was a one off and outside the sailing season (so apologies with hindsight). The highlight of January though has to be the Ivan Brown and John Swingler Pre-season Perambulation. With 34 intrepid walkers setting off from Apethorpe for a 2 and a half hour walk in between 2 periods of heavy rain over fields, you may disagree. However, everyone made it without the Air Ambulance - probably spurred on by the anticipation of the wonderful meal at the end. If all those 34 can be there for the first race of the season.................!!!!! Throughout the whole year, we have committee meetings usually once a month, held either at the club or a local hostelry. This year we have a very enthusiastic and extensive group and we need to, as we have a few challenges ahead - notably, most likely, new owners of the reservoir, planning for the future and all the various events of the year. Before that though we have two weekends of working parties starting on Saturday 16th/Sunday 17th and Saturday 23rd/Sunday 24th, at 10.00am onward -ALL Welcome. Details to follow by email. By now hopefully all will have received emails detailing the new membership forms. There has been a slight increase in subscriptions but it is still great value, especially if you return by February as a discount is still available! Nigel Austin - Commodore |
